SCRATCH BASTID - SOUL SISTERS STAND UP
SCRATCH BASTID - SOUL SISTERS STAND UP
Canadian dj Scratch Bastid drops his latest mixtape soul sisters on us, an all sister soul and funk double mix. i had the pleasure of booking scratch for my club night early this year and he was hands down one of the best party rockers I'd ever seen. details and links below.
Dear fellow music junkie,
This is the Skratch Bastid writing to you on behalf of The Gaff and myself from my melted igloo in Toronto, Canada. Today, July 17th, we are releasing a mix that we've been working on for quite some time (read: forever) and I would love for you to have a listen to it. Prime summertime extended listening action here.
Soul Sisters, Stand Up! is an 80-minute mix filled with 100% Female Funk/Soul/R&B/Breaks. 2 DJs. 2 years in the making. Featuring the sounds of soulful ladies from the mid-60s & mid-70s – a snapshot of love, pain, happiness, oppression, strength, struggle and more from an era where records were the primary outlet for these voices. These messages are driven home by the beats and grooves from what is undeniably the funkiest decade in music history. From Freda, Aretha, Nina & Diana to Betty Everett, Lavette & Davis, we take you on a journey to a mindset, using tunes both classic and criminally overlooked to tell the story. Mixed together in classic mixtape fashion... you know, with mixing.

CUBAN FUNK - JUAN PABLO TORRES
JUAN PABLO TORRES - ALGO NUEVO
For some reason this is a record I put off buying for a while even though I knew it was dope. I had heard the tune "Son of propulsion" on a few mix tapes and comps and always really dug it. But I think I was too heavy into digging for Afro and Colombian stuff the last few years and Cuban funk was always pushed aside. Now I'm living for the funky cuban vibes.
So I finally saw it pop up on the bay and decided it was time to cop it. What I didn't realise though was the whole record is complete fire. It's the perfect blend of latin, psych, funk and rock. Another jam is the opening track "Y QUE BIEN", with the killer beatbox style latin intro this ones for the tropical heads.

people hear what they see
ODDISEE - PEOPLE HEAR WHAT THEY SEE.
Washington DC native ODDISEE has become an independent hip hop juggernaut. He has released more than 10 albums and mixtapes since 2005 and in 2009 and 2010 he produced four instrumental beat tapes.
His 2011 release "Rock creek Park" was definitely one of the best instrumental beat releases of the year.
People hear what they see is a great album which Oddisee raps on every tune. Fresh beats of mixed tempos. Mellow music group is giving away "Way in Way out" for free here
enjoy
DREAMING ABOUT YOU
THE BLACKBYRDS - DREAMING ABOUT YOU
Taken from the action album 1977 on fantasy records. Such a smooth, rare groove, soulful joint with a killer break at the intro. For me this jam always was overshadowed by "Mysterious Vibes" taken from the same album. Going back over your Lp's from time to time you realise you tend to forget about all these great jams you have.
sampled by Scientifik's Zhane, Kool G Rap and Dj Polo to name a few this is a well loved rare groove number from one of the finest in the bizz.
