DJ DAY - LAND OF 1000 CHANCES

Its been a while since we heard from Dj Day. His seminal 2008 release "The Day Before" was a big influence on me and a record I have happily kept in my bag since. Upon listening to "Land of 1000 chances" I can honestly say it is some of day's more experimental work.  Jazz, instrumental rock and hip hop all get touched in this release.

executively produced by "Thes One" of "People under the stairs" fame and featuring some top notch muso's such as "Kat 010" from "Crown city Rockers", Land of 1000 chances is an honest and beautiful release. Despite the personal demons Day had to fight see below.

The idea for all of this was to go back to my roots and encapsulate the last few years of what was going on in my life. I needed to get away from the clean, over-produced music I was making that had slowly put me in a creative corner cover the last 5 years. I was stuck. It’s not in me to make electronic music (I suck at it to be honest) and I didn’t want to re-hash the cut and paste stuff I had done before, so what the fuck do I do now? I go back. Back to the first album I ever made in a bedroom in Palm Springs with an EPS, my cousins drum kit and some records. I had to get back to where I came from in order to harness where I was now. Fuck layering and smothering songs to oblivion. These needed to breathe. Keep it intentionally sparse and simple. It had to be about creating a vibe and sticking to it. Not throwing in a random dance cut or having it cluttered with guests. It had to be honest and real. Somewhere along the way, I ended up drinking way too much, traveling and hanging out way too much and on the precipice of divorce. They say write what you know, so I did.   -  Day

Dj Premier & Joey Bada$$ - Unorthodox

While the rest of the worlds hip hop artists are producing half time, low slung 70 bpm club tunes, it's refreshing to Hear certain artists from NY (Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson e.t.c) keeping the golden era head nodders alive.

20 year old BK kid Joey Bada$$ seems to definitely be a breath of fresh air in hip hop today. Spitting concious lyrics over crunchy drums. And who else to provide the soundtrack then The living legend "Dj Premier". In his signature simple chops and breaks with scratch hooks and Joey's very brooklyn flow this tune is more new york than a chill dawg!!!!
