LEE FIELDS - YOUR THE KIND OF GIRL

Who ever said soul music is dead obviously hasn't been paying attention to labels like
"Truth & Soul" and "Daptone" records.

From the new High priestess of funk " Sharon Jones" to the heart breakingly sincere
" Charles Bradley", To Mr "Lee Fields". One could say quite easily that soul music is alive and well in the 21st century.

Following on from his 2009 Lp "My World" which Is in my opinion the finest modern soul record in over a decade. Fields hits us with "Your the kind of girl". A sweet soul jam of the highest quality. This is feel good music for feel good people.

Walter Heath - Brother

Nice Rare Groove monster here at "Brother" taken from the 1974 release on Buddah records "You Know your wrong don't ya brother".

quick drum fill intro into a fat bass line, guitar driven rare groove loop. Vocals not long to follow either. very tough drums on this track too.

a few dope tunes on this Lp such as "Every fool on earth" and "Made to love" as well as some nice ballads which are just food for the sampler.

TALL BLACK GUY- RETURN OF HERE AND NOW

Brand new hip hop/soul vibes from tall black guy productions (detroit). I first heard tall black guy through his incredible re-working of "Fela Kuti's" water get no enemy which was featured on Giles Petersons latest "Brownswood Bubblers" compilation.

this is an amazing sign of things to come from the motor city local.

Dance forever is a deep soulful sexy laidback jam with a dope female hook and some tight rhymes and a nice drum break throughout.

The return of here and now is a more uptempo dancefloor number with an almost P-funk feel with some great boogie funk references, I think I heard a piece from fatback's Backstrokin' in there.

Common - Blue Sky (Official Lyric Video)

Common drops the new single of the upcoming album "The Dreamer, The believer at the same time".
Blue skies is produced by No ID who sampled "ELO'S" "Mr Blue Sky". I personally find the beat a little lacking although the concept is interesting the drums could be harder. But chi towns legendary Common pulls it together with strong lyrical content and flow.

not as banging as "Ghetto Dreams" ft NAS but a good sign of things to come for the upcoming album.

DTMD - MAKIN' DOLLARS

SOME NEW HIP HOP I'M FEELING.

DTMD - MAKIN' DOLLARS

Mello music group hits us with another dope album by fresh faced crew DTMD featuring beats from Kev brown, Oddisee, and some dope rhymes featuring My favorite newcomer "YU".

Very smooth beats definitely a huge dilla influence there.

This album is great and hopefully a bright sign of things to come. Shit these kids ain't even old enough to drink yet. Damn

FELA SOUL

GUMMY SOUL - FELA SOUL

Gummy soul hits us with a quirky but surprisingly good beat tape of de la soul acapellas over fela kuti loops.

Much in the same vein as the "Ghostfunk" beat tape a while back.

You really can't mess with fela kuti's music as a sample it just sounds so earthy and warm. And de la's flow over the top just compliments it perfectly.

EVIDENCE - YOU PROD DJ PREMIER

EVIDENCE - YOU PROD DJ PREMIER

Evidence (dilated peoples) hits us with one of many (I hope) dope singles from his upcoming "Cats and dogs" album.

Primo on the beat in his signature simple chops and cuts with incredible drums aaaaahhhh what would we do without primo?

Evidence kills it best hip hop track of the year so far? maybe between this "Dirty- NAS" and I gotta say I know watch the throne had its fair share of haters but "welcome to the jungle" was ridiculous!
So much good hip hop right now I might have to do another "Just Listen" mixtape!!!

R.I.P NICK ASHFORD"

We say goodbye to another legend of soul music today as "Nick Ashford" from husband and wife duo "Ashford and Simpson" has passed away from complications with throat Cancer.

Ashford's input into Soul music, disco and his influence in Modern forms of dance music is undeniable. From the early days of writing hits for Motown with his partner in crime "Valerie Simpson", The duo were responsible for such hits as "Aint no mountain high enough" (Marvin gaye & tammi terrell & "Cry like a baby" (Aretha Franklin).
To the proto disco sounds of "Chaka Khan", "Diana Ross" & "Teddy pendergrass".

In 1974 Ashford & Simpson got married and continued their career as a duo with the Warner bros album "Gimme something real" Followed by the hit singles "Don't cost you nothing", "It seems to hang on", "Is it still good to ya", and one of my personal favourites "Street corner".

I have been playing "Ashford & Simpson" records regularly for about 10 years and most likely always will. You will be missed "Nick Ashford" R.I.P

Norman Jay - Good Times 30th anniversary

Norman Jay MBE presents Good Times 30th Anniversary.

Putting this one out to My man Norman Jay , without a doubt my Number 1 influence and mentor in this dj'ing game. I still remember dancing to one of Normans sets for the first time about 11 years ago and having tears of joy streaming down my face. To Me Norman is the ultimate dj He plays uplifting, positive music designed to make the listener/ dancer feel total happiness. He is not a chin stroking music snob who will only play the most underground rare exclusive music, he plays music that a 5 yr old or an 80 yr old can enjoy and get down to. And because of this he is still as relevant as ever in the game today. This compilation marks the 30th anniversary of his Good Times sound system parties at Notting hill Carnival. The comp contains everything from old soul, Funk, hip hop, house, disco, Jazz and reggae. Bringing you back to a time where dj's played all forms of good music not pigeon holing themselves into sub genres and trends. If it's good play it!

I feel blessed to have performed along side Norman and very privileged to call him a mate.

Jay electronica

Jay Electronica - Run & Hide produced by the bullitts.

I was a huge fan of exhibit C when it dropped, The Billy Stewart sample was incredible and his flow was great. He jokingly listed off numbers of prolific rappers who were using different forms of social networking to get in touch with him about when his album was finally going to drop.

In a way I felt it was a very refreshing and satisfying feeling that there was a relatively unknown Mc out there who just might possibly be a new hope for hip hop. His album still hasn't dropped I'm not sure if he is purposely trying to create this suspense or if his creative process is just really this slow but all I can say is I hope it's worth the wait.

There has been a few tracks to drop in the last few weeks that have used very controversial samples. The Kanye, Jayz Otis joint(view below) has received nothing but contempt. Perhaps there really are some tunes you should just leave alone!

I really don't know How I feel about this one. "Hunky Dory" by "David Bowie" is possible in my top 10 no wait top 20 favorite albums of all time. I was raised on that shit!! My mother being a huge fan of bowie made sure I knew every word to this album by the age of 10. Maybe I'm being protective over it because I have so many childhood memories listening to this album. Or maybe it just aint that cool.
I'll let you decide this is Run & hide Jay Electronica

royce da 5'9 / eminem

LIVING PROOF ROYCE DA 5'9 / EMINEM

Okay I gotta admit I've never been a huge eminem fan. Even though I could really appreciate his content I just could never get passed the voice and the flow style.

But he kills it on this track. I've been a fan of Royce for a long time and Its nice to see the two reunited after falling out for so long.

Living proof kicks off with a very obvious yet effective funky drummer chop which in all honestly you really can't hate on no matter how many times you hear it, stubblefields pattern is undeniably awesome. Then come in the heavy dillaesque synth stabs transforming it from a nice funky jam into a darker very detroit sound beat.

OTIS

OTIS - JAY Z / KANYE

so hova and weezy drop there first single from the highly anticipated "The Throne" Lp.

sampling heavily from a Redding classic, kanye has once again made a beat so simple and catchy its makes beatmakers around the world think, Why the F%$k didn't i think of that.

The rhymes aren't amazing but they coast through the song in there usual cocky, cool we run the show style attitude. Which is always fun.

Post comments to let me know what you think.

WE MISS YOU

DJ PREMIER/ BIG SHUG - WE MISS YOU (GURU TRIBUTE)

been over a year since GURU aka keith edward elam passed away far too early. Dj Premier and big shug present this heartfelt joint out to the original bald head.

very emotional track going out to one of the greatest Mc's of all time.

For me personally Gangstarr were the reason I got into hip hop in the first place. Guru's monotone voice and cocky yet concious flow on the mic matched with the neck snapping boom bap style beats of primo and his signature style simple yet very effective cuts, for me was the perfect marriage. Guru was "probably" my favorite mc ever. Not Something I think about often but if I had to decide it would be most likely be Guru. I had the good fortune of meeting the man and I was overwelmed at his honest and down to earth attitude and how he had time to speak to every body in the room who were dying to speak to him. A truly amazing soul. "WE MISS YOU".............. MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY.

ROB- FUNKY ROB WAY

ROB - FUNKY ROB WAY

Our good friends at "Analog Africa" have reissued a essential Afro funk Lp in the form of
Rob - Funky Rob way.

Ghanian born "Rob" was hugely influenced by the american r&b performers of the time such as james brown, wilson pickett and ray charles.

He had also had the privilege of performing with benin afro funk royalty "poly rythmo orchestre" and "black santiago".

I've uploaded the title track an absolute afro funk monster, with everything I could hope for from the genre. Nice chant, strong drums, killer bassline and fela style rhythms.

ASHA PUTHLI

ASHA PUTHLI - SPACE WALK

this jam comes from classical indian trained vocalist Asha Puthli from her 1976 LP "The Devil is Loose".

Space walk is a rare groove style jam with Asha's unusual vocal style not unlike "Kate bush".

The first thing to grab you is the killer bass line, followed by the high pitched vocals and then the strong drums.

over her career Asha has worked with the likes of Alice coltrane, Roy ayers, freddie Hubbard and sonny rollins to name a few.

hip hop heads might recognize this from the biggie joint "the world is filled". peep the DL below.

BY MY SIDE

PURE PLEASURE - BY MY SIDE

TUUUUUUUNNNNNNEEE!!!!

this track has always been a favorite of mine. Not sure If I would call it rare groove, modern soul or just soul, but whatever it is this 45 is hot.

From the intro horn stabs to the sweet soulful vocals this tune has you hooked in the first 2 bars. I'm surprised it hasn't been sampled more often!

Released in 1980 on QC records this tune proves soul music has the power to break through all trends and prove why its the greatest music on earth.

MUSIC IS MY SANCTUARY

GARY BARTZ - MUSIC IS MY SANCTUARY

The title track from his 1977 release on capital. Music is my sanctuary is an absolutely essential piece of jazz funk. Produced by none other than Larry Mizell from the legendary Mizell brothers.

With Mizell on keys next to Bartz soulful sax playing this is a sure fire winner. My only complaint with this is the intro. I never feel the fade intro but there is dozens of re- edits available with a strong break intro. Infact if anyone knows a good one or wants to get busy on one themselves holla at a brother. HAWAIN FUNK

LEMURIA - HUNK OF HEAVEN

A dope slice of funky rare groove from the pacific ocean.
Lemuria were a 16 piece group from Hawaii that featured around 4 vocalists. In 1978 they released "Hunk of Heaven" on a 45 to promote their self titled LP.
The 45 is stupidly rare and I only have a copy on a BBE compilation. check the DL below

GIL SCOTT HERON

As I'm sure your all aware by now "Gil Scott Heron" passed away May 27th 2011. Truly a living legend. He was a poet, singer, activist, author and musician who created a fusion of blues, jazz and soul as well as lyrical content concerning political and personal issues.

Sadly after a long struggle with HIV he passed away but his memory lives on. I could post my favourite Gil song but have decided instead to post a tribute mix by none other than BBC presenter and "Brownswood" head honcho "Giles Peterson". I think "Giles" nailed it with this mix and anyone who is a gil fan should give it a listen.

BILL SPOON

BILL SPOON - I BET YOU CAN'T LOVE ME ONE TIME.

track 1 on side b of Bill Spoon's 12" from 1990
"The One who really loves you" on BMI.

A seriously funky, folky almost bluesy soul tune. Nice guitar intro making it easy to mix and fits snuggly in between a soul tune and a funk tune making it a nice transition record.
For me "I bet you can't love me one time" is the standout track by far. Although the rest of the record is nice this is the only track I would play in a dj set.

CAROLYN FRANKLIN - DEAL WITH IT.

Carolyn Franklin one of the 3 Franklin sisters . The Other Irma who has some dope music as well, and of course the most famous The Queen of soul Aretha Franklin.

Deal with it is a tight funk workout from 1976 from her LP If you want me.

nice drums and vocals with that Don't F@#k with me sister funk attitude.

YOUNG MONTANA - SACRE COOL

YOUNG MONTANA - SACRE COOL

you know sometimes a producer flips a track and you think.. wow that was really clever! but then sometimes a producer flips a track and your jaw is left on the floor.

This is one of the most interesting examples of sampling I've heard in a while or maybe it was because I love the o.g so much it excited me? But to be honest I think it's because it opened my mind to the prospect of flipping all those boogie joints I love so much rather than the usual jazz, soul samples I normally use. Hats off to you "Young Montana" f@#$ing killed it!!!!!!
p.s to hear the o.g look below!

FATIMA

WARM EYES.

really feeling this joint at the moment Fatima who shares her time in between Stockhom and london has a great vibe and is working with some dope producers.

this track she has collaborated with one of my favourite artists of the past few years "DAM-FUNK". In his usual style of sweet synth lines and 808 drums his presence is undeniable.

look out for her follow up EP with deep house producer " Floating Points" .

DOROTHY ASHBY

AFRO - HARPING

One of those albums I put off picking up for years (mostly due to the fact that an O.G isn't easy to find), But when this parcel arrived at my door today It was time to make a cup of tea put my slippers on, roll a spliff and get down to some serious, hardcore zoning out.

The Fact this record came out in 1968 blows my mind it's so progressive! Richard evans stood in as producer and conductor which can only mean good things.

In all honesty this could be a contender for one of my favourite all time records, seriously dope the whole way through. Put this on the "Highly recommended" list and file under "Super awesome afro jazz harp breaks".

MAYER HAWTHORNE

this tune has been out for a minute but it wasn't till I heard the Jazzy Jeff roller boogie remix that i really starting playing it.

the words "Jazzy jeff's roller boogie mix" would pretty much make me buy anything. The day you get Jeff on the remix is the day you know your going somewhere.

big love out to Mayer for this feel good mid tempo jam.

SOM TRES

SOM TRES self titled Lp from 1969

heavy Brazillian breaks. Absolute dance floor fire here at homenagem a mongo.

dope.

DO IT TO THE MAX

XAVIER'S 1981 release "Point of Pleasure" is a dope boogie Lp featuring "work that sucker out", "Love is on the one" and my personal favourite "Do it to the Max".

A slow burning fat bassline sounds like a more modern nu disco joint. Very Sleazy and I cant be sure but I think Xavier's a Pimp.
Enjoy.

MARCELLUS PITTMAN

Marcellus Pittman hailing from detroit on a deep housish tip kicks off with a boogie break I know i have some where but can't put my finger on which one it is, if anyone can help I would appreciate.

this tune is ill and worth checking out if you dig his stuff check him out on juno for more.

DEBRUIT

DEBRUIT

an artist, beatmaker from france who is killing it right now to take a quote from his bio.

debruits music is a no holds barred assault through dark congolese soundsystems, downtown L.A block parties gone wrong, haze filled kingston recording studios and freaky tunisian backstreet souks, all powered by a fat hip hop engine.

sounds great to me

This Friday

Okay so The Manor has been going straight chaos the last few with "The Stoops"http://www.facebook.com/TheStoopsOfficial

kicking off the first of our live sessions and doing a damn fine job. Arms in motion , royce and yours truly on the decks holding it down.
But last week was "Houseshoes" from detroit who held it down for 3 hours with straight fire, detroit hip hop and funk and some previously unreleased Dilla action to boot. Hats off sir.

This week comes "Boogie Down Under 5" with Zeus rock spinning some classic B Boy break material and Dj Junior (3 time WA dmc champ) with an hour set of pure turntable surgery.

I'll be spinning some boogie some funk and old school jams to keep the place jumping till the wee hours. NOT TO BE SLEPT ON PEEPS!!!!

NEW BEAT

Okay so here is the latest jam, kinda like a brazilian, hip hop future beat with a mellowed out synth bridge. catch the DL here
